Baldur’s Gate 3 Director and Gaming Icons Praise Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues to gain recognition in the gaming industry, this time receiving praise from Baldur’s Gate 3’s performance director.

The game, released on April 24, 2025, is the debut project of French studio Sandfall Interactive. Since its launch, it has quickly become one of the most talked-about titles of the year.

On Larian Studios’ official Twitter account, Baldur’s Gate 3 performance director Ben Lidstone spoke highly of the game during a livestream. At the 54-minute, 20-second mark, he mentioned Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 when asked if he was playing any games with animation or motion capture he admired. Lidstone said he only played the beginning of the game but was impressed, describing it as “a game that knows what it is and leans into that” — calling it “beautiful.”

This is not the first time a Larian developer has praised the title. The publishing director of Baldur’s Gate 3 also expressed admiration for Sandfall Interactive’s work.

Beyond Larian, other gaming legends have joined in showing support. John Romero, the co-creator of Doom, called Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 “the future of the gaming industry” and praised indie developers for pushing boundaries. Meanwhile, Neil Druckmann, head of creative at Naughty Dog, said the game offered “one of the most creative and exciting stories [he] had played in a long time.

Despite its success, Sandfall Interactive confirmed it has no plans to expand its team for now. However, the studio is exploring future updates, including additional content, accessibility improvements, and localization options. A release timeline for these updates has not yet been announced.

With recognition from some of the biggest names in gaming, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most celebrated releases.
